Teaching

Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Guitar, Workshop Leader

Composition, Harmony, Theory

I teach bass guitar, double bass, and guitar using the Trinity and ABRSM grading systems. I specialise in working with intermediate to advanced-level students. I can assist with GCSE and A-level theory, preparation for grade exams, and guidance for auditions for higher education. Additionally, I have experience teaching adult students who are looking to take their playing to the next level. I provide comprehensive tutoring in technique, theory, sight reading, and repertoire.

Since 2019, I have been a Guest Lecturer in both Music Technology and Songwriting at BIMM Brighton. In 2014 I undertook the DipHe Music For The Media course (Thinkspace Education). This was an insightful course covering aspects of composing and scoring music for Film, TV and Internet media platforms. In addition to a strong portfolio, this course provided me with an excellent foundation for teaching songwriting and music production. From 2016 to 2023, I taught Keyboards and Composition, and led Performance Workshops at London Music School. During my time at LMS, I developed and taught a course specifically designed for first-study vocalists who wanted to enhance their knowledge of music theory, harmonic concepts, and keyboard skills.

From 2016 to 2021, I was the head tutor for Bass Guitar and Double Bass at Bede's Senior School. I taught students from beginners to grade 8, and mentored first study bassists in repertoire required for university and conservatoire auditions.

In 2024, I graduated with a Master's degree in Music Education from Trinity Laban. I chose to specialize in Jazz education, and one of my major projects involved understudying and observing the final-year BMus Jazz students at Trinity Laban for a term, under the guidance of Hans Koller. During this time, I observed various influential teaching styles and learned different approaches to modern education in higher learning institutions.
This experience led me to research the concept of Jazz as 'Cultural Capital.' I discussed the idea of 'capital' beyond just economic outcomes, which directly relates to my placement observing Jazz undergraduate students. This research can help identify the connection between study and professional practice.

Another significant project involved writing a thesis on the renowned US jazz saxophonist and educator Randall Allsop, examining his ideas and unique concepts in modern pedagogy.

I  Jointly devised and facilitated a two day Jazz Workshop for secondary-aged students entitled ‘The Riff Project’ in collaboration with Create Music in Sussex. This was an inclusive music ensemble provision for pupils to have space and time to explore improvisation and composition with others.

My MA final dissertation was titled "Action Research Into Music Technology Engagement." In this study, I evaluated the current level of music technology used by instrumental teachers and explored ways to enhance their knowledge and application of technology. My goal was to provide insights into the challenges music teachers encounter when integrating technology into their teaching practices and to develop training materials that would improve their technological expertise.
